Talk to Mom

When you're in that "in-between stage"—not yet a teen, but definitely not a child—sometimes, you can feel like nobody takes you seriously. Kayla thinks she is ready to handle more responsibilities, but she doesn't feel like her opinions count. Eventually, she proposes a solution to Mom that might help her family, and her Mom listens!

  • Think of a time when you solved a problem all by yourself. What did other people think of your decision?
  • What Next?
During a parent's deployment, kids often have to "step up." And like Kayla, you might have some suggestions that will help your family. Take a few minutes to brainstorm some concerns or ideas before you sit down with your parent, keeping in mind everyone who may be affected by your solution. Think about what you want to achieve in the discussion—more responsibilities, information, just an ear to listen to your concerns. Sometimes it can be hard to express yourself without becoming emotional, but the more prepared you are, the more your parent will be appreciative and receptive.
