Talk to Emma

It's pretty normal to want to protect your brother or sister, especially when you're going through some tough times, such as a parent's deployment. Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out the best thing to do. Like Ian's dilemma: he's worried about Emma, but doesn't want to rat her out or bother his deployed mom. So, he decides not to tell on her—this time. But he's not sure if he made the right decision and he's still worried about Emma.

  • When have you held back something important because you didn't want to burden your parent? What kept you from telling your parent? What else could you have done?
  • What Next?
Ian has made it clear that he's not going to keep protecting his sister. He's already reached out to a friend. If he's still feeling uncertain, it could help to discuss this with another trusted adult—like a teacher, family member, or counselor.
