Keep the Secret

Being loyal is admirable, but not when it hurts other people. Grace's "friends" are cyber-bashing a classmate. It's wrong—Grace gets that; she just isn't sure what to do. Plus, she's sworn to secrecy. She wishes her mom were here to help. Dad wouldn't understand. So Grace holds it all inside—but she's hurting others as well as herself.

  • Think about a time when you did something to someone that wasn't so nice. Did you try to make the situation right? If so, how?
  • What Next?
Never assume you have to keep things to yourself. It's not easy to tell a secret, even if it's wrong to keep it. It's not too late for Grace to "fess up." She could go to her dad, but she is worried about what he will think. For now, Grace can use her journaling to express her ideas and her feelings. Maybe once she gets her thoughts down on paper, she will feel more comfortable sharing what she knows with a teacher or other trusted adult. Telling the secret not only will lift the burden off Grace's shoulders, but it will also open the door to taking steps to fix the situation.
