Differences: Before & After
Your parent's finally home from deployment. You're so glad to see him (or her) but you may notice behaviors that make him seem not like himself or as you remembered him. Some of these behaviors may include:
- Not talking to you as much or at all
- Wanting to be alone or with combat buddies
- Suffering bad nightmares
- Having sudden bursts of anger
- Unusual reactions to loud noises or crowds
These behaviors are symptoms of post-traumatic stress (PTS). Post-traumatic stress can develop because of experiences your parent had while deployed. Just know that the symptoms have nothing to do with you and that there are many mental health providers who can help him feel more like the person you remember.
