Figuring It Out
It's one thing to notice the changes in behavior of your parent, but it's another to understand that he's dealing with PTS. Being in the dark about what's happening to your parent can be stressful. All you really know is that your dad was one person before he deployed and now he's different. Figuring out what's happening can help relieve some of the stress you feel. If you're reading this, you're already helping yourself to learn more. Here are some ways to get some help or more information to learn more about PTS:
- Talk to someone like your other parent or close friend
- Do a search on the internet for "post-traumatic stress" or "PTSD"
- Read information on the National Center for PTSD website — www.ncptsdva.gov
One part of figuring it out is learning that it's not your responsibility to fix him and there are professionals that can help.
